Baotou Iron & Steel (Group) Co. was founded in 1954 and inaugurated in 1959 with Premier Zhou Enlai attending; based in Inner Mongolia. It controls the Bayan Obo deposit — the world's largest rare-earth deposit, holding roughly 83.7% of China's proven reserves and about 37.8% of global reserves (over 35 million tonnes of rare-earth oxides). It is the world's largest rare-earth base while also producing rail, plate and bar steel.
