Country Garden (碧桂园) was founded in Guangdong's Shunde district in 1992 by Yang Guoqiang and listed on HKEX in 2007 (ticker 2007), becoming China's top-selling developer by contracted sales for several years through 2022, chaired by Yang Huiyan. It plunged into a liquidity crisis in 2023, defaulting on offshore bonds in October that year amid roughly $180 billion in liabilities. A Hong Kong winding-up petition was filed in 2024 with hearings repeatedly adjourned as the company pursues an offshore debt restructuring plan.
