China's largest oil field, discovered 26 September 1959 (well Songji-3) in Heilongjiang; operated by CNPC. From 1976 to 2002 it sustained annual output above 50 million tonnes, a record in oilfield history. By 2019 cumulative production exceeded 2.5 billion tonnes, about 36% of China's onshore crude output. In 2021 the Gulong block became a national shale-oil demonstration zone; in 2025 its output topped 1 million tonnes for the first time.
