Doutor Coffee, founded by Hiromichi Toriba (registered 1962, brand launched 1980), opened Japan's first self-service espresso-style cafe in Harajuku, named after a Sao Paulo street where the founder once worked on a coffee plantation. Now under Doutor Nichires Holdings, it runs roughly 900 Doutor shops in Japan and over 1,200 including sister brands, one of the country's largest, oldest coffee-shop chains, known for affordable quality.
