Description
Nitori was founded in Sapporo in 1967 by Akio Nitori; in December 1975 it opened Japan's first air-dome furniture store, and in 1981 it expanded beyond Sapporo for the first time. The company moved to a holding-company structure (Nitori Holdings) in 2010, and in 2016 founder Akio Nitori handed the presidency to Toshiyuki Shirai. Running an SPA model (in-house manufacturing plus retail), Nitori became Japan's largest furniture and home-goods chain: by August 2025 the group operated 1,046 stores worldwide, including 535 in Japan.
