Pang Dong Lai (胖东来) was founded in March 1995 by Yu Donglai, who started with a roughly 40 sq m tobacco-and-liquor shop in Xuchang, Henan province (renamed 'Pangdonglai Tobacco and Alcohol Co., Ltd.' in 1997). It has grown into a supermarket and mall chain widely known for exceptional customer service and employee welfare — since 2000 Yu has distributed most company shares to staff, keeping only about 10% himself. 2024 revenue was about RMB 16.96 billion with roughly 7,000 employees; the chain has deliberately stayed within Henan province rather than expanding nationally.
