In January 2024, ByteDance invested $1.5 billion for a 75.01% stake in Tokopedia, merging it with TikTok Shop into a joint venture branded 'TikTok Shop by Tokopedia' — a response to Indonesia's September 2023 ban on social-commerce sales. The integration came with roughly 450 job cuts and seller complaints about falling revenue. Its chief rival is Shopee (a Sea Ltd unit), which continues to lead Indonesian e-commerce by GMV.
