Description
Yakult Honsha traces back to microbiologist Minoru Shirota, who in 1930 became the first in the world to isolate a strain of Lactobacillus casei able to survive gastric acid and reach the intestines alive. The resulting probiotic drink, Yakult, went on sale in 1935, and Yakult Honsha Co. was formally established in 1955. The group now spans nearly 200 companies in over 30 countries — the pioneer of Japan's probiotic beverage category.
