The world's biggest butter factory on New Zealand's west coast belongs to a Chinese company

伊利集团 / Yili — China's largest dairy producer — is rarely associated by foreign observers with manufacturing anywhere outside the country. Yet the company's Westland facility in New Zealand, after commissioning a new production line, has doubled output of high-quality grass-fed butter to 42,000 tons a year, becoming the largest butter factory on New Zealand's west coast and the largest such facility built overseas by a Chinese dairy company.
A global network's scale, not a single project
Westland isn't an isolated asset — it's part of a built-out infrastructure: Yili has more than 2,000 partners spread across 39 countries on six continents, 15 R&D and innovation centers, and 81 production sites worldwide. The company officially describes its structure as a unity of three systems — global resources, global innovation, and a global market — present in regions with developed dairy industries: Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania.
An initiative formalizing global ambitions
In May 2026, Yili launched its "Global Innovation Vanguard" program, aimed at deepening collaboration with foreign research institutions and technology partners to accelerate product development and scientific breakthroughs. In early August, the company hosted the 2026 World Dairy Industry Conference in Inner Mongolia under the theme "Technology-driven, Partnership-oriented" — a symbolic gesture: a Chinese company as host, not guest, of the industry's flagship annual event.
Why this matters beyond the dairy industry itself
Yili's story shows a less obvious path of Chinese globalization — not exporting a finished brand to consumers abroad, but acquiring and modernizing relevant production assets on-site where suitable raw materials already exist (in New Zealand's case, quality pasture-fed milk) and logistical proximity to target markets. It's a model applicable far beyond the dairy industry — from textiles to electronics.
